This drum is a reminder and testament to Gentle Strength and the love of innocence. Built twice from a thin reindeer skin, her lesson for me as the drummaker is that less can be more. In this case, less tension and less trying, and more trust.
On this drum the main lanyard came through the punched holes in the skin on the first try at tying, yet the drum felt very determined to be born. I tied the drum a second time with new holes, this time leaving away all tensioning, only
taking away the slack and allowing the drum to dry as taut as she would
.
On the finished drum you can see this earlier series of punched holes beside the ones it's now tied up from. Yet despite the challenge, the drum plays really well, and as a finished drum doesn't seem fragile at all. She loves to be played and is offering herself as an instrument for that purpose.
The energy of the drum itself is one of gentle strength and sureness. On making the drum she felt like lioness. Gentle, relaxed and focused. Yet with an evident strength, determined and even fierce if need be, but without any need to prove herself to anyone. Other associations might be to swans or to any other female archetype, who through their presence radiate a yin peace and gentleness first and foremost, but who also understand that to allow and create the space for the vulnerability and innocence they gladly and proudly mother, an inner strength is to be expected and is always present. This, to me, is the paradigm of the New Earth, where openness, softness and trust are the new reality, yet they are supported by an inner strength that we don't shy away from, for we recognize it as love.
The size of the drum is 39 cm.
The price includes a felted mallet, either light or heavier, according to your preference.
Lighter mallets give a more resonant tone and greater control, whereas heavier mallets may produce fuller and slightly muffled sounds with less overtones and more bass.
