Weisenau–Niedermörmter type helmetWeisenau–Niedermörmter type helmet
Continental classification hull: Weisenau–Niedermörmter/Guttmann type
Detailed reconstruction of the AG 800 from the famous old Axel Guttmann collection, which was disbanded a few years ago and is being sold at auction. The river find is said to come from the Balkans, but the exact location is unknown.
After the figurative decorations, the helmet is also called "mouse and loaf of bread". While the typical round loaf shape is known from finds from a bakery in Pompeii, the mouse or rat was a common symbol, also found on lamps or measuring handles.
The helmet corresponds to a similar find from the Lower Rhine city of Niedermörmter (Germany). Compared to previous 'Weisenau' models, the neck protector is now particularly expansive, a response to the opponents of the time and their weaponry. The missing original cheeks were reconstructed in extensive investigations.
