This gorgeous handmade drum was purchased from Atlanta's Earthshaking Music in the mid '90s, and has primarily served as decoration in a climate-controlled home for the last 25 years. It was rarely played, and has never been taken outside the home.
The origins of the Ashiko drum are traced to the Yoruba culture in (mainly) present-day Nigeria and Benin, West Africa. The drum has a long tradition in community celebrations of the Yoruba culture, and were traditionally hand-carved from a single piece of wood.
This 22-inch tall vintage version is made with pine, cedar, and walnut wood staves, topped with an 11-inch African goat skin head that retains the beautiful fur around the outside fringe.
It's a light drum with a big acoustic sound, including a strong bass note, warm tone, and a distinctive slap at the rim. The metal rings and 5mm drum rope maintain the tuning using a traditional Mali weave, so there's very little of the tonal variation you get from some Djembes in humid environments.
It's also one of the lightest full-size hand drums you'll ever play, with two loops that make it easy to carry or strap to your body. It's in mint condition for a vintage drum, with no visible scuffs or other flaws to be found.
