    Description

Viking sword of Langeid (Norway) with sheath, s. Xi.
Viking sword of Langeid (Norway) with sheath, s. Xi.
This sword from the late Viking Age is inspired by a unique find that was unearthed from tomb No. 8 during archaeological excavations of a Viking cemetery in Langeid (Setesdal Valley, Bygland, Norway) in 2011. The remarkably well-preserved piece made of iron, gold and silver is now on display for people to admire at the Museum of Cultural History. Kulturhistorik Museum in Oslo.
Dated to ca. 1030, the original is a unique specimen, as both the guard and the knob are richly adorned with a combination of spirals, runes, Latin letters and crosses. Although its exact meaning is still a mystery, some of these motifs clearly carry a Christian message and indicate that this Nordic weapon was deliberately adorned with Christian symbolism. The dating of the sword (early 11th century, which marks the end of Nordic paganism and the advent of the Christian Middle Ages in Scandinavia) corroborates this assumption.
In addition, as the sword was found along with a broad axe that had similarities to other axes of the same period discovered by the River Támesis in London, some experts believe that the sword was brought from England to Norway and may have been the prestige weapon of a rich warrior (possibly one of King Canute the Great’s champions).
Our reproduction of this exceptional one-handed Viking sword features a double-edged EN45 spring steel blade with a wide, long blade. The edges are not sharp and the entire blade nipple is bolted and riveted to the knob. The guard and knob are made of brass, partially tarnished and faithfully recreate the highly detailed motifs and patterns of the original artifact. The handle of the wooden core is tightly tied with brass wire.
This one-handed Langeid sword comes complete with a wooden and brown leather sheath with a very distinctive wooden suspension loop (maximum belt width 5 cm) and brass accessories.
Note that this sword is not a battle-ready weapon. It is designed as a collection piece or decoration/exhibition and is not suitable for combat recreation.
