Gandalf the Grey’s staff is a symbol of his status as Istari or Wizard. It was once owned by Radagast the Brown, crafted from a young tree turned upwards and twisted, once crowned with root-shaped branches and bumps, but now everything is broken and worn out.
In addition to being Gandalf’s trusted staff and a combat weapon when needed, it possesses deep magical power. The mark of Radagast’s rune is carved into the side and the crown features a grooved shape that once held Radagast’s blue glass, now serves as a place for Gandalf to store his pipe. On the side of the cane is a nail that Gandalf uses to handle tobacco, and was once used to scrape a rune on the door of Bilbo Baggins’s house in Hobbiton.
