On 21 July 1403, the Battle of Shrewsbury (Shropshire, England) saw Henry IV’s victory over an army led by his former supporter, Sir Henry Harry Hotspur Percy of Northumberland (which Shakespeare made famous forever in his 1598 history). Although this beautiful sword of good value is not a replica of the historical example mentioned above, it presents the typical characteristics of a traditional one-and-a-half-handed sword from the late 14th/early 15th century (also called a bastard sword) and has the model of the same swords that would have been used on both sides in this great English battle.
The double-edged blade is forged in hardened and tempered EN45 spring steel. It has a diamond-shaped cross section, gently narrows towards the tip and is rounded on both sides. The large central fuller ends approximately halfway through the leaf. The thick edges are not sharp, the tip is rounded and the entire blade spike is riveted to the knob.
The handle consists of a wooden core handle wrapped in brown leather, a steel faceted hexagonal odor stopper knob and a flattened steel cross guard. The guard’s quillons have flared terminals, each decorated with a cross-shaped cut. The perforated guard is about 23 cm long and 0.5 cm thick.
This late medieval hand sword comes complete with a wooden sheath and brown leather with steel collar and chape.
