Scandinavian Vendel Sword with tinned brass handle and Damascus steel blade
Scandinavian Vendel Sword with tinned brass handle and Damascus steel blade
This vendel-period sword is inspired by a finely crafted and richly decorated find carved into the tomb of a ship in the cemetery of a ship near Uppsala, Sweden. Due to its sumptuous and intricate details, it is believed that the original archaeological piece was the prestige weapon of a 7th/8th century. Swedish chieftain, nobleman or elite warrior. Many findings attributed to the Vendel era (approximately between the Migration Period and the Viking Age in Swedish history) testify to the high quality of craftsmanship that could be achieved at the time.
As for form, this one-handed sword is a classic example of a Nordic weapon. The double-edged blade with wide fuller is forged in Damascus steel. The edges are not sharp and the entire blade nipple is riveted to the knob.
The 9 cm long, 1.5 cm thick protector and generously sized knob are made of brass and closely recreate the highly detailed engraved motifs and patterns of the original artifact. The polished finish, which gives them a silvery appearance, is accentuated by contrasting aged brass bands. Like many original examples of this time period, the knob consists of several parts riveted together. The knob lid is embedded with red enamel that reproduces genuine garnets. The handle of the wooden core is lined with brown leather.
This Vendel one-handed sword comes complete with a wooden and brown leather sheath with a wooden suspension loop (maximum belt width 5 cm) and a mint neck and layer.
Note that this sword is not a battle-ready weapon. It is designed as a collection piece or decoration/exhibition and is not suitable for combat recreation.
