Sasuke is one of the best ninja learning school scorers and the best «Genin» (novice/world ninja) from Village Hidden in the Leaves. He is the only remaining member of the Uchiha clan, a ninja clan that was once powerful in the village. He’s very dark and serious, and he focuses on nothing but training to become a stronger ninja. All of this has one ultimate goal: revenge. His life’s ambition is to become powerful enough to kill «a certain man» (his older brother Itachi). As part of the Uchiha clan, Sasuke has a higher «chakra» (spiritual energy/chi). He also has a technique for blowing fireballs from his mouth.
In addition, as a member of the Uchiha clan, he inherits the Kekkei Genkai (or lineage trait) from the clan: the Sharingan. He begins to unlock it in the fight with Haku (who himself was using a Kekkei Genkai) and gradually gains strength as he learns to use it to track movements and observe ninjitsu techniques. It helps to have a hollow head like Naruto as a teammate. At first he doesn’t like Naruto, but as they and Sakura learn to work as a team, he shows a surprising will to protect Naruto. It is the beginning of a rather complex relationship between teammates and rivals, as each observes the other but at the same time wants to be better than the other. When Sasuke fought Naruto, each of them uses a powerful jutsu. Naruto uses Rasengen and Sasuke uses Chidori. Chidori, also known as Raikiri (Lightning Sword), is a jutsu taught to him by Kakashi.
That sword is worn by Sasuke after he left Leaf Village to train with Orochimaru, one of the show’s leading anatomists. Sasuke seeks to kill his older brother for revenge when Itachi (Sasuke’s brother) went crazy and murdered the entire Uchiha clan except him and Sasuke. After two years with Orochimaru, Sasuke killed him when he realized he had outperformed his master and no longer needed him. After that we see him carrying, but rarely using the sword. Although this is probably due to the fact that we’ve only seen a little bit of what happened to Sasuke after he teamed up to help him locate his brother.
