This Roman spatha is a reconstruction based on several originals of the 3rd century. examples found near Podlodów (now Poland), in the archaeological region of Przeworsk culture. Some more Podlodów-type leaves were also found along or near Limes, the border of the Roman Empire. Most of these spathae are supposed to have originated in Roman blacksmiths and eventually found their way beyond the limits of the Empire to the Barbaricum.
Although the length of the blade was not very different from its previous counterparts, this particular spatha variant featured a wider blade with typically two to four fullers and is believed to have been designed as an effective cutting sword for melee combat.
The broad, double fullered, double-edged Roman long sword blade we offer here is forged in EN45 spring steel. The edges are not sharp and the entire blade nipple is bolted to the knob. The oval-shaped flattened guard and knob handle with octagonal handle is made of brass-encrusted wood.
This one-handed Roman sword comes complete with a red wooden and leather sheath with a brass layer and a suspension loop (maximum belt width of 5 cm), accented with black drawstring ornaments.
Note that this sword is not a battle-ready weapon. It is designed as a collection piece or decoration/exhibition and is not suitable for combat recreation. In addition to its quality as a collection object, it also fits perfectly as an accessory, p. E.g. to complete your costume.
