Roman Helmet Witcham GravelRoman Helmet Witcham Gravel
This beautiful Roman helmet is a replica of a 1st century (50-75 AD) find, which was excavated in 1870 by peat cutters near Witcham Gravel, Cambridgeshire, England, and can now be admired in the British Museum in London.
The largely preserved original, classified as a Roman Type B auxiliary cavalry helmet, consisted of a core (now almost completely corroded) of iron with outer shell of partial bronze (copper alloy, canned). Traces in the apex area indicate that the helmet originally had a plume. Although this artifact has some distinctive features typical of a so-called Imperial Gallic or Imperial Gallic helmet (sloping neck guard, cheek flaps with circular ornamental rosettes), it is the only surviving specimen of the Type B helmet. This uniqueness lies in the presence of large and hollow hemispheres or humps made of bronze, which adorn the neck protection and the bell of the helmet. Due to the characteristic shape of this humpback, reminiscent of bicycle bells, this rare piece was nicknamed a bicycle bell helmet in England.
This reconstruction of the Witcham Gravel Roman Auxiliary Cavalry Helmet with movable cheek flaps is made from 1.2mm polished steel and richly decorated with brass applications. Since the helmet does not have an integrated liner, the use of an additional upholstery hood is recommended to allow for comfortable use. Small rings on the inside of the cheek flaps offer the possibility to attach a chin strap (not included).
The yellow plume, based on a reference in Ars Tactica by the ancient Greek historian Arrian, has a red lacquered wooden frame and can be attached to the pre-drilled decal thanks to 3 supplied screws.
