Roman Fulham Gladius type with sheath, 1st c.Roman Fulham Gladius type with sheath, 1st c.
The gladius, the main weapon of the Roman legionnaires of the s. Ⅲ. A.C. to 3rd c. AD, was used in many variations over the centuries. Designed primarily as a push/stab weapon, it was also quite effective for cutting or cutting. Finally, this highly feared short sword was gradually replaced by the longest spatha during the Middle/Late Roman Empire.
This short Roman sword is a classic 1st century reconstruction. Fulham (or Mainz-Fulham) gladius type, named after an archaeological find of the early 1st century AD recovered from the Thames in Fulham (London) in 1883. The remains of the original, the iron leaf with a broken, handleless spike and sheath, from which only the frame, the hood and two bronze plates survived, are on display at the British Museum in London.
With its parallel, straight (or sometimes slightly «fit») edges and long tip, the Fulham pattern is believed to be a type of transition between Mainz and the later types of Pompeii. However, as the Mainz and Fulham gladii were used simultaneously during the first half of the 1st century, some historians regard Fulham as a mere variation within the Mainz group.
The wide, straight double-edged blade of the Roman sword we offer here is forged in EN45 spring steel (not tempered or hardened). It has a diamond-shaped flat cross section and a long, pointed tip. The edges are not sharp and the entire blade nipple is bolted to the knob (upper brass nut). The handle is made of wood and features an inserted brass protection plate.
This one-handed Fulham-style gladius comes complete with a wooden and brown leather sheath with protective brass accessories (a neck band, three cross bands and a frame or side gutters that extend from top to bottom and end in a finisher). The two upper bands are equipped with cast brass suspension rings that allow the wearer to bring his gladius in true Roman style.
Note that this sword is not a battle-ready weapon. It is designed as a collection piece or decoration/exhibition and is not suitable for combat recreation. In addition to its quality as a collection object, it also fits perfectly as an accessory, p. E.g. to complete your costume.
