Finally, the steel is engraved with acid to highlight the vivid contrasts in the thousands of layers.
Made of blood, sweat, tears and Damascus steel, Boshin swordsmiths are among the best in their craft.

To achieve dramatic enough contrasts between layers, Honshu blacksmith masters must expertly select an appropriate combination of steel alloys of different colors, luminescence, and other visual qualities.
