Handmade Native American Wood (Pine?) & Rawhide Hoop Drum; Made by Master Craftsman Grey Hawk of Santa Fe, N.M. See stamp/ engraving in photo. Beater not included.
We purchased this drum directly from the maker at the Denver March Powwow back in the early 2000s. The heads each have a different pitch and timbre. The quality of the craftsmanship is obvious in the consistency of the stringing of the rawhide heads and their tightness and tone. The shape of the wooden body of the drum is not uniformly cylindrical, so the heads are not uniformly round either. The diameter of the heads varies but averages around 13.5 inches and the body is about 4.25 in. We have oiled the heads over the years to prevent cracking in a dry climate such as ours here in Colorado.
