Description
Gladius Legionnaire Romano with pod, first century D.C.Gladius Legionnaire Romano with pod, first century D.C.
Designed primarily as a thrust/stabbing weapon, it was also quite effective to cut. Finally, this highly feared short sword was replaced by the longest spatha during the Middle/Late Roman Empire.
Inspired by gladii used by Roman legions during the first half of the 1st century BC. The double-edged blade with diamond flat cross section is forged in EN45 (non-tempered) spring steel. With its parallel, straight edges and long, pointed tip, it corresponds to a classic Fulham or Mainz-Fulham gladius type, which is believed to be a type of transition between Mainz and the later types of Pompeii (or a mere variation within the Mainz group). The edges are not sharp and the entire blade nipple is bolted to the knob (upper brass nut). The handle is made of bone, protection and wooden knob. The protector features an inserted brass plate.
The wooden and brown leather sheath of this one-handed Roman gladius features elaborate brass accessories (a perforated medallion, crossed bands with suspension rings, and a side frame or gutters that extend from top to bottom and end in a button cap). The throat plate on the observation side is adorned with a sun-shaped feathered geometric pattern, and the V-shaped hood area with a symmetrical pattern of stylized curls topped with a palm. The sheath’s montages are inspired by period finds, especially the remains of an I-century sword sheath. Naufragio of Porto Novo near Porto Vecchio (Corsica), which was also identified as a type of transition due to its shape, size and ornaments.
It is designed as a collection piece or decoration/exhibition and is not suitable for combat recreation.
