Description

DHYANGRO TIBETAN SHAMANISTIC DOUBLE SIDED DRUM 13" CIRC. CARVED HANDLE, RATTLES.
I don't know much about this drum; I took it to 2 antique shops for appraisal. Both said the drum seemed authentic, something used in ceremonies by Tibetan or Nepali shaman. One said the painting was possibly authentic. The other said they believed the painting was a later addition. So I don't know which it is.
The drum is handmade; the drum edges uneven, not a perfect circle at all. The circumference is between 12 and 13" around. One drum face is plain, the skin scarred and colored by time and use. The other displays a painting shown in photos. The skins are taunt, tightly braided into the sides material, which is uneven as well, between 4 and 5 inches wide. The webbing, I believe, is made of reed or some kind of woody grass.
The handle of the drum is intricately carved with faces at the base on 3 sides, possibly a Buddhist idol or monks. Underneath, more carvings. Braided patterns that lead to spirals on the flat three sides of the handle tip.
The sound of the drum is as expected, thrumming and deep, but inside the drum there is something that rattles as the drum is used.
