Cold Steel - Jade Lion Gim Sword
Cold Steel - Jade Lion Gim Sword
The concept of the guardian lion emerged in China more than 1800 years ago during the Han dynasty. The lion, fierce, brave, loyal and fast, was the perfect symbol to protect the home and home. Both decorative and symbolic, it was common to see elegant sculptures of these lions guarding the houses of the rich and aristocratic or even the gates of the Imperial Palace and the tombs of Chinese emperors.

The Cold Steel® Jade Lion series has proven incredibly popular with Chinese martial artists and blade collectors alike. Hand-forged and tempered by experts from high-quality Damascus steel, its leaves with subtle drawings are as sharp as they are beautiful. The heavy protection and knob are made of alpaca and adorned with attentive Chinese lions, which contrasts with the elegant jade green color of the cord-wrapped handles and rosewood pods that are covered with Samé (ray skin), dyed to match, the handles.
The Jade Lion Gim is a wen Jian (Scholar’s Sword) of civil self-defense, with a little more garbo than the practical versions (like Cold Steel’s Gim Sword®) that were made for the battlefield. In Cold Steel’s ®, he cut and drilled 10cm bamboo poles with a single cut or thrust.
The terms Damascus steel, damasquinado or welded with pattern designate a forged composite steel from two or more different types of steel. It is named after its birthplace, the Syrian city of Damascus, an ancient bastion of stamped steel production. As a common practice, a harder high carbon steel and a softer low carbon steel are repeatedly forged and bent. High carbon steel ensures greater hardness, better temperability and longer-lasting edge retention, while softer steel confers greater blade flexibility and tensile strength. This procedure, which arose at a time when steel grades were often low and inconsistent, allows the positive attributes of different steel grades to be combined. In addition, the different nuances generated by the variable carbon content of the alternating layers engender surprisingly beautiful patterns. Undoubtedly, these unusual patterns partly explain why magical properties inherent in the Damascus steel leaves of the Middle Ages were attributed.
