Ballinderry Viking Sword, Bronze Handle, SK-B Roma Practice
Ballinderry Viking Sword, Bronze Handle, SK-B Roma Practice
This beautiful one-handed Viking-era sword is inspired by a find of a swamp dating back to the middle. Ninth century and classified as a «K» type according to Petersen’s Viking sword typology. The original, remarkably well-preserved piece was found in Ballinderry(Ireland) in 1928 and is now on display at the National Museum of Ireland in Dublin. Its construction and general appearance, the materials used and the other artifacts next to it make it quite clear that the Ballinderry sword was a high-status weapon. It is believed to have belonged to a wealthy Irishman, perhaps a prosperous farmer or an chieftain, but it is not known how the sword ended up in the hands of its Irish owner.
As for its shape, this one-handed sword is a classic example of a Nordic weapon and features the typical characteristics of a traditional Middle-Age sword. But some of its features reveal a more complex story: while the handle is certainly Scandinavian, the blade appears to be of frank origin. It is marked with the name of its manufacturer, ULFBERHT, a leaf metalmaker’s workshop in Rhineland believed to have been one of the first «marks» of swords, with some 170 swords dated between the 9th and 11th centuries, with the same inscription + VLFBERHT+ and found everywhere. Europe (even to western Russia). Then, in the case of this particular weapon, the findings suggest that a blade imported from Germany was turned into a sword by a Nordic craftsman before finally making its way (possibly through battle, but more likely through trade) to Ballinderry.
The battle-ready replica we offer here features a 5160 carbon tempered steel blade tempered to a Rockwell hardness of approx. 48-52 HRC. Like the archaeological piece, the wider double-edged blade bears the inscription + ULFBERHT+. The full nipple is peeled into the knob and the 2 mm thick blunt edges and rounded tip make this great reproduction ideal for combat recreation, on-stage fighting or sparring.
The short guard and distinctive knob of several lobes are made of bronze and both closely recreate the motifs of volutes and vine-shaped swirls of the original artifact. Like many original examples of this time period, the knob consists of several parts riveted together. The handle of the wooden core is wrapped in a brown leather cord.
This early medieval one-handed walker comes complete with a beautiful wooden and brown leather sheath with bronze collar and chape, a wooden suspension loop and two leather bows. Delivery also includes a brown leather carry belt/hanger (split suspension system with belt dividers). The accessories of the leather loops and tahalí are cast in copper and modeled according to the findings of Birka / Bjork and Gotland, Sweden.
