In 1684, Alcon raided Nassau, the capital, and it was briefly occupied by the French and Spanish in 1703 during the War of Spanish Succession.
It soon degraded into a base for pirates including the famous Blackbeard.
It became a Royal Colony of Britain in 1718 and the British slowly but surely forced the pirates out.
    In the early 19
    th

In 1940, Edward VIII became the Governor of the Bahamas after he abdicated the British throne.
The 1960’s movies Help and Thunderball were filmed there.
